The years have proven him out. Regardless of the economies of the career and job marketplace, the psychological attributes associated with the employer marketplace have significance to current as well as prospective staff. Barrow's point: Be careful of the message you're sending to job candidates and those influencers in them. Careers are decisions different in texture and weight from typical consumer and even most B2B purchases. You can't sell commitment without an in-depth understanding of your own vision, your workforce and the needs of the job market.

The Employer Brand succeeds in bringing together People and Brand in one seamless framework. The idea that the customer brand is built from the inside out has gained currency but very few authors have been able to provide a satisfactory methodology to achieve this. It probably helps that the authors of this book have experience in both marketing and HR so they understand how to apply the marketing tools to the Employer Brand. I found this book extraordinarily useful and readable although a bit muddled and repetitive in places. Still I have used it in my work and would not hesitate to recommend it.

If you are an active investor you will find this a fascinating and useful book. It teaches you how to spot when a bull market will become a bear market in time. That is get out before the decline. He shows how taking the Leading Economic Indicator, the LEI, seriously is the right way.Important reasons why investors get the timing wrong are lack of discipline and ignorance in the sense of wrong concepts. Discipline refers especially to not selling unnecessarily. Shares go up and down. Most investors when a position in a portfolio goes down consider selling and replacing it by a winner. They consider a small loss far more important than a large gain. This is behavior based on the past of what has already happened. Fischer points out that what matters is what is expected to happen in the next 30 months.Another important factor is the media that write about the stock market. People are more interested in bad news than good news, and therefore the majority of articles are written about short-term disappointments and negative developments further in the future than 30 months. His definite view is that both short-term opinions and extrapolations of the past and past 30 months predictions are useless for predicting changes from bull to bear and vice versa.Fischer points to more than thirty widely held views he considers wrong. Some examples. A high Price Earnings ratio (PE) has no validity in predicting a better or worse development than a low PE. Small companies do not have a superior long-term performance than large ones. The increase from long-term interest rates does not lead to a change in a bull market. Wars do not influence the stock market other than of the magnitude such as World War II. Fisher presents straightforward statistical proofs. He puts these concepts to tests to determine if these widely held view correspond to what happened in reality. It is necessary to look at a complete picture; there are always examples where these factors appeared to be right, but they are far fewer than when proven wrong. For learning to spot in time approaching bears and bulls this book is first class, five stars.Fisher frequently states that he is not a sociologist but nevertheless holds very negative opinions about politicians. Many people will have different views. His negative views of political leaders are so strong that they even get in the way of his statistical proofs. For example he states on page 132 that in 1938 the GDP started to increase when Franklin Roosevelt was president and on page 143 that a bear market reigned from 1934 to 1942. The reality is that already in 1934, FDR's second year in office, GDP increased with 10.8%. He states about the ACA on page 152 that the uninsured were reduced with between 7 to 10 million and on page 154 only with 1.1% which is only 3.5 million or half.Fisher as a non-sociologist has very definite opinions on government. He sometimes creates the impression that the kind of policies that President Hoover pursued most of the time of non-interference in the economy is the only right policy and political action. I nevertheless also enjoyed this part as he does also make thought-provoking comments on political action.

Worth reading. To be a good investor or speculator, you need to keep your spirits and mind clear. And to do that you have to shut out the din the media creates. This book is about the things you *don't* need to bother thinking about, and about the sorts of things you do need to consider.I find Fisher a little tiresome at times, in some of his other books and occasionally in this one. The contrarian schtick among other things. But even given that, this book is worth reading. It will free up your mind to think about the important things, or even just to rest a while. It's not that long or hard and it will sweep out all the incessant KRP. And save you time-- no, you don't need to watch that "financial" TV show.I'm very glad I read it.

This is the first one of Ken Fisher's books I have ever read, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I was worried that I might not understand it or get lost after the first chapter, but actually it was pretty easy to follow. He goes through his explanation of contrarian investing (which I did not know much about before) and it all made good sense. He talks about a lot of things you hear on the news day to day, like global warming and America's runaway debt problems. The part that was interesting to me is that he does not really go into a long diatribe about what will or won't happen with these issues, he simply describes what they mean for an average investor. He also makes a lot of pop culture references that seemed unusual for a finance book but some of them were pretty funny. I will probably pick up one of his old books based on how much I enjoyed this one.

Just finished up with this book last night, and I'm glad I found it. I've dabbled on and off with investments over the years, with streaks of success and patches of rockiness. This book helped me to rethink some of my basic approaches to my portfolio, and in fact I'm probably going to look at my investments this weekend and make some changes based on what I've learned. In particular, I've found that I'm paying too much attention to short-term news and letting it make me either too excited or too scared. The funny thing is that I kind of already knew that about myself, and often times I would make a change knowing that I probably shouldn't. Reading through this book has affirmed that I should stick more to fundamentals and not worry so much about what I read in the paper or see on TV.The book itself is an easy read and only took me two days to finish. It's also written in a way that seems easy to understand even for someone who doesn't have a background in investing or know all the technical jargon. I also like that there are a lot of charts and other graphics to visualize the points being made. I always find it easier to see a concept displayed in a graph so that was a big help for me.Would definitely recommend this book for anyone managing their own investments or just interested in how it works.

I was a longtime reader of Mr. Fisher's column in Forbes magazine. Mr. Fisher is my favorite author when it comes to financial markets. He provides a lot of information that in retrospect should be obvious. This book is excellent at understanding why so many people in the herd are wrong so often. Mr. Fisher always blends in some humor which makes his writing fun as well as educational. He includes a lot of information regarding other books on this subject. Excellent as always!

This is the 3rd Ken Fisher book I've read, and once again, I'm very impressed by the overall simplicity of concepts combined with the deep knowledge and real evidence (not statistical jargon!) he provides in his work. I'm by no means a financial guru, but I read about "money" quite a bit, and I struggle to find an author I'd place above him in terms of logical, practical, and applicable advice. He is easy to follow no matter what your level of expertise might be - I highly recommend this newest book!

More than once when I was immersed in this book ("reading" does not do justice to the experience) I thought of Thomas Jefferson's quote: I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just.I agree with previous reviewers that this is a must-read book to help get an understanding of the effects of Jim Crow on life in the South. A couple reviewers noted that the author doesn't do justice to the whites in the south who did not go along with the racist system. I suggest that that was not the purpose of the book.Litwack wanted to give an understanding of what the experience was like for Blacks living under Jim Crow legal and extralegal conditions. Any possible non-racist experiences at the hands of a white person would not in any way alter the day to day existence for Blacks: they lived in pervasive fear not knowing what might set off some white person and end in the death of a Black person. For more than a decade there averaged one lynching a week. This was in addition to the killing of Blacks by other means or the Blacks who suddenly disappeared.With slavery abolished (and Black people no longer valuable property) it became literally open season on killing Blacks. The author uses anecdotal accounts and lots quotes to show what this meant to Blacks trying to work, get ahead, raise their family, participate in a community.The chapters that deal with lynching are the most chilling. Heart breaking too are the catch 22 situations visited upon Blacks. Whites justified their supremacy by maintaining that Blacks didn't have what it takes (smarts, perseverance, etc.) to be successful and then not only kept Blacks from opportunities to better themselves (education, fair wages, business opportunities) but also deliberately, in cold-blood took away what property an achieving Black might accumulate. Arson was a favorite method but out-right murder worked too.I recommend this book to anyone who wants a sense of how life for Blacks in the south was systematically circumscribed in service to the ideology of White Supremacy. It is very very readable (that is, not written as a boring old history book).I also take away an appreciation of how methodically established was the system of intimidation, oppression, and violence. The South wasn't a place of casual bigotry. Litwack provides ample quotations by whites as they explain, maintain, and justify the characteristics of their racist society. The lack of shame would be stunning except such deep immorality has no shame.It's a mere 150 years since the start of the Civil War. A hundred years ago Jim Crow was in full sway. How does the South see Blacks nowadays, treat Blacks now? After reading Trouble in Mind I'm not sanguine that the deep racism that has characterized the South is easily put by.

I am surprised Dr. Litwack has not killed himself after writing such a book. Like Iris Chang. Primo Levi. Sometimes looking into he maw or evil cannot be survived. Sure won't see this on a college curriculum.

An amazing book! Wonderfully written, an excellent read. I have long known about the " Jim Crow" South, but have never fully grasped the horror of being black during that period, and the full extent of torture, mental and physical applied by White Southerners for no good reason. The use of actual quotes from people who lived through it make it come alive.

This is one of those books that's both tough to read and tough to put down. It's tough to read because you don't want to believe that such a large group of people in our country were capable of inflicting such physical and mental suffering for any reason, let alone skin color. But it's hard to put down because it's interesting, informative and well written, and because I was drawn to how the southern blacks coped and developed different aspects of their culture during this time.The book covers the Jim Crow-era South, from the 1880s until about the start of World War I. Litwack's research is tremendous, as he details many aspects of life in the South during this time. The chapter on lynching is heartbreaking and infuriating. I was captivated by sections on the development of blues music, Jack Johnson and the impact of the black churches. You'll find yourself shaking your head often while reading the book and rooting on people like the domestic servant who urinated in her boss's coffee.Litwack is redundant at times in this book. It's readable in the sense that it's written clearly and well, and I have no problems with him telling multiple examples of lynchings and other mistreatments. These are integral. No other book I've read documents the pain and suffering of the Jim Crow South like this one. The book focuses on the era after Reconstruction to the early 20th century, which was arguably the worst time period to be a black person in the American south. This book is well researched. It will give you a greater appreciation for the suffering of your fellow man.

About the Author

Since 1999, Rabbi Dr. A. Yehuda Warburg has served as a dayan (rabbinical judge) on various battei din panels in the Hassidic, Modern Orthodox, Sephardic, and Yeshiva communities in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area. He is a former research fellow at the Institute of Jewish Law at Boston University School of Law. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Tradition and served on the editorial board of The Jewish Law Annual. For over two decades, Rabbi Warburg delivered classes in Hoshen Mishpat (business law) and Even ha-Ezer (family law) to rabbinical students at Rabi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, an affiliate of Yeshiva University. He is the author of dozens of articles in the areas of jurisprudence, family law, bioethics, contracts, and securities law that address the interface of Halakha and U.S. law, and he is the author of Rabbinic Authority volumes 1 and 2.

Rabbi Dr. A. Yehuda Warburg, holding a doctorate of jurisprudence, has, among much else, served as a dayan, judge, at all levels of Jewish religious courts. He offers readers interesting Jewish court decisions in this book. It is the third volume in his discussions on Beit Din (Jewish court) decision on various issues. This volume focuses on halakhic (Jewish Law) decisions regarding cases of divorce and Agunah. According to Jewish law, only a husband can grant a divorce, a wife cannot end a marriage by giving her husband a divorce. If a husband refuses to give his wife a divorce or the husband disappears and therefore cannot give a divorce decree, the wife remains un-divorced. She is “chained” to her husband. Agunah means “chained.”The Hebrew Bible gives few details about marriage and divorce. Deuteronomy 24:1 states: “If a man takes (yikach) a wife and has sex with her, but she becomes displeasing to him because he found something wrong, he should write a bill of divorce for her, place it in her hand, and send her from his house.” The Bible states “takes” a wife and was understood to allow only men to consummate marriages, women are passive. The same applies with divorces; men write bills of divorce and hand them to inactive spouses.As a result, there are too many separated Jewish women whose husbands refuse to give them a get, a Jewish divorce. These women remain married to their estranged husbands and cannot remarry. It is not uncommon for these husbands to blackmail their wives saying, in essence, “I will not hand you a get unless you give me…” and frequently, this demand is for hundreds of thousands of dollars.Warburg suggested a possible solution to the Agunah problem in his first volume of this series. In this volume, he discusses various cases that arose regarding invalid marriages and divorce, such as is a divorce necessary if the marriage ceremony was conducted with less than two witnesses, can and how can a witness be invalidated, can a wedding be invalidated when the officiating rabbi was not Orthodox, can a husband’s misbehavior invalidate a marriage, can a husband’s premarital misrepresentation invalidate a marriage, can we suppose that a currently insane husband was insane when the marriage ceremony occurred, and much more.The case studies that Warburg presents are very interesting.

I've followed Prudence's work for a while and love this book. It's endearing, easy for anyone to relate to, and chocked full of light-hearted illustrations and unrestricted humor. Comic strip Prudence and the real Prudence are the sort of person you would want to be friends with.

Excellent invitation to why every Christian should engage in theology (although, they already are whenever they ask and seek to discover life's ultimate questions).Olson & Grenz define and defend theology, discuss theology's task's and tradition, the tools required, how theology should be constructed, and the purpose of theology: to bring theology to life in our lives.For anyone who has a negative attitude towards theology, who find it destructive to the spiritual life, just plain boring or too complicated to be involved in, or just is a new believer finding an interest in the Christian doctrine, this short (only 150 pages) and easy read is for you; it's a great place to start on the road studying the Bible.

If you come to this book look for an introduction to a particular theology you will be let down, but that is never what Grenz and Olson claim to be doing in their book. The set out from the beginning not to give you a theology from any perspective but rather to invite you to live more fully into the theologian you already are. On these accounts they do a very good job of defining what Christian theology is and then showing the way forward to thinking theologically.Do keep in mind that this book is very basic, but again that is what it was intended to be. It is not a book about becoming the next great thinker of our time but about taking the first infantile steps toward learning to have a faith that interacts with the world around you. Their last chapter is especially helpful on this front as they circle back to the theory of thinking theologically that they have put forward in the previous chapters and give practical steps that a person might take. They don't claim to be an exhaustive work on theology but if you read this work well Grenz and Olson will point you in the right direction.

Clearly proposes that any person who ponders about the deep things of life and poses questions about God is a theologian, that there are levels of theology that meet different needs, that theology goes beyond mere head knowledge and involves both brain and heart as well as application with integrity of our beliefs to our thoughts and actions, and that it seeks to find agreement between the what the Bible teaches, our Christian legacy and the needs of our culture.

The subtitle of Grenz and Olson’s book bears the words “An Invitation to the Study of God”. Indeed, while the title “Who Needs Theology?” may seem like a rebuttal to theology proper, it is immediately clear that both of them intends to offer an answer to those who might be skeptical towards theology thinking that it is a purely man made enterprise or those who might have succumb to the idea that it is counterproductive towards faith and “experiencing God”.The question is answered promptly at the beginning of book with the chapter titled “Everyone is a Theologian”. There, theology is defined as “any reflection on the ultimate questions of life that points towards God”. As such, it is clear that ever since men looked up into the heavens, wondered about the reasons for his existence and pondered on the beginnings of the universe, its machinations, life and ultimately whether there is a being of higher order “out there”, he is a theologian! The authors point to the fallacy and indeed the dangers of reducing the Christian faith to experience (which has no objective method of accessing its validity) or hearsay (which often involves blind faith) and instead beseech all Christians to “examine beliefs and teachings about God, ourselves and the world in light of Christian sources, especially in the primary norm of the biblical message”.While the typical objections to theology are expounded and rebutted, the authors nevertheless reminded us that the Lord desires Christians to pursue theology in our own context with all the limitations of life that our context involves. Perhaps even more importantly, it is this limitation that ultimately surfaces good theology and the richness that it entails. Expanding on the need to involve theology “in our own context”, the authors presented two approaches to theology and culture and argued instead for a trialogue, that approaching culture by beginning from biblical theology or vice versa only “presents a dimension of what remains a mystery”. This is a cogent reminder to the lay theologian and seminarians alike that theology is ultimately undertaken not to amass knowledge, precepts and doctrines but rather to approach the infinite mystery with the intent to enable Christians to engage their culture and to articulate the Christian message such that the faith continues to be a living and transformative force in their lives.The warning against intellectual substitution is perhaps most vivid in the authors’ depiction of a person who, because of a love for travel, began studying maps (engaging in the activity of cartography) and eventually confused cartography with seeing the world. One of the best books for children published. It makes the people who took part in the Corps of Discovery come to life. As they set out on this great adventure where no American citizen had ever gone before, the reader feels the excitment. The author tells of the training and preparation that went into the trip. Her story brings the reader along for the journey.

A wonderful book, well-illustrated and perfect for a basic understanding of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

As a teacher, this book was helpful in terms of providing great pictures and overall ideas. However, I found that the maps, some dates, and stopping points are historically incorrect. Therefore, I do not use it in planning my lessons. I use it only for pictures.

We have done quite a bit on Lewis and Clark, including driving the Lewis & Clark Trail three summers ago. (For that trip, this book was indispensible : Traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail, 4th (Falcon Guide))What I like about this book are the illustrations and the age -- this is great for upper grades who maybe aren't ready for Stephen Ambrose Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West, but still want high quality writing and history.Great maps and illustrations. This is a keeper.
