Rhoda Blumberg has written about the opening of Japan (1853-1854) in Commodore Perry in the Land of the Shogun, a Newbery Honor Book, which also won the Boston Globe/Horn Book Award and the Golden Kite Award. Her acclaimed histories also include The Incredible Journey of Lewis & Clark, The Great American Gold Rush, and The Remarkable Voyages of Captain Cook, all ALA Notable Books. She is the winner of the Washington Post/Children's Book Guild Award for her overall contribution to nonfiction.Rhoda Blumberg says that while doing research for Commodore Perry, "I read about the ordeals and strange adventures of Manjiro, then spent years replaying his life story in my mind until I felt impelled to write about him."The author and her husband, Gerald, live in Yorktown Heights, New York.

One of the best books for children published. It makes the people who took part in the Corps of Discovery come to life. As they set out on this great adventure where no American citizen had ever gone before, the reader feels the excitment. The author tells of the training and preparation that went into the trip. Her story brings the reader along for the journey.
A wonderful book, well-illustrated and perfect for a basic understanding of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
As a teacher, this book was helpful in terms of providing great pictures and overall ideas. However, I found that the maps, some dates, and stopping points are historically incorrect. Therefore, I do not use it in planning my lessons. I use it only for pictures.
We have done quite a bit on Lewis and Clark, including driving the Lewis & Clark Trail three summers ago. (For that trip, this book was indispensible : Traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail, 4th (Falcon Guide))What I like about this book are the illustrations and the age -- this is great for upper grades who maybe aren't ready for Stephen Ambrose Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West, but still want high quality writing and history.Great maps and illustrations. This is a keeper.
