Incorporating math into a Kindle formated ebook isn't easy and after beating my head against the problem I was relieved to find not one, but several solutions to choose between. This book isn't going to set the world on fire, but it will leave you understanding the problem and with a good grasp of how to approach it.
... I would definitely recommend buying this book. A few months ago, I was trying to figure out how to get equations to look right in Kindle e-books and it took me many hours to develop a very imperfect understanding of what was needed and how to do it. Save yourself the time and aggravation and buy this book!
There is far too much discussion, so not really clear what needs to be done to get equations to show up correctly. I decided to roll my own instead of trying to crack this book. I'm guessing that it does contain some useful information.
I'm helping a family member edit and publish a scientific book in both print and ebook formats, including Kindle. This book has saved me so much time! Although its topic is pretty specific, I can only imagine the math-on-Kindle niche will grow, as more and more authors look to publish technical books on this platform. It's very well-written and efficient in laying out exactly the problems you will encounter, and it solves them in a systematic way. You learn about all the tools Amazon provides for Kindle authors, and there's a chapter on getting graphics to look their best that goes beyond the math focus of the book. I can't recommend it highly enough.
It's quite a short book but provides some very valuable guidelines for a small amount of money. It amazes me that a company such as Amazon whose owner aspires to a space programme, has put so very little effort into better enablement for technical publications. I would have thought it would be an area in which they would wish to excel rather than be a laggard. I have published 7 Kindle books containing equations and have been depressed by the erratic quality of images displayed over a variety of devices and software. My books sell for low value, however I would raise the price if the rendered images were better and Amazon would then make more money. Come on guys(Amazon), wake up and get your act together, i.e. lead from the front, it is not as if you cannot afford to be the industry leader and influence or fully follow standards in this area. Thanks to Jack Lewis, I will be experimenting with his ideas PDQ.
Finally, a very good reference for resizable equations formatting in kindle format!For years I have been reading, in kdp forum as well as others, that ebooks were nothing for math and science ebooks, due to their poor support for equations. With kindle format now partly supporting svg format, it is possible to format nicely resizable equations, even in kindle format. But up to now only a few publishers did it, each in his own playground...Jack W. Lewis offers a deep investigation of all aspects of this complex problem, ending with an appropriate suggested work flow. This book should be offered by amazon to each starting publisher: it would highly enhance the quality of proposed math and science ebooks!
