Mary Kay Andrews is one of my favorite writers for when I’m looking for something light, fun, and with a Southern-twist. Little did I know that she also has a mystery series written under her real name, Kathy Hogan Trocheck. I read Irish Eyes which is the 8th novel in her Callahan Garrity series and is now being marketed under her pen name. Again, this book delivers what I have come to expect from Andrews, but it also has a serious side, as well.Callahan Garrity is an Atlanta native and former cop who lives with her mother. While not running a cleaning agency with her mom called The House Mouse, she moonlights as a private investigator. The novel opens on St. Patrick’s Day and her former partner, Bucky Deavers, asks Garrity to accompany him to a St. Patty’s Day party. He wants to introduce her to his fiancée. The host of the event, The Shamrock Society is made up of Irish-American cops. When the fiancée doesn’t show and Deavers becomes too drunk, Garrity insists that Deavers drive her home. But on a pit-stop at a local liquor store, Deavers stumbles upon a robbery and ends up being shot twice. While things are not looking good for her former partner, Garrity starts her own investigation when she hears rumors that Deavers was dirty. In fact, the local rumor-mill is spreading allegations that many cops are dirty and they’re robbing ATMs when businessmen are making their nightly deposits. Of course, Garrity needs the help of her local “cleaning girls,†two who have had their AARP cards for decades, as well as former cops and friends in the know. What she learns puts her life in danger, as well.Mary Kay Andrews has a way of finding humor in almost any situation. As for Garrity, “I quit the force and bought the business in a snit ten years ago, after the bosses had refused to transfer me to the all-male homicide squad. Still, police work, like venereal disease, gets in your system and is hard to shake.†And thus she ends up with a private investigator’s license. The dynamics with her mother are also funny and I can certainly relate. Her mother is famous for “that look. It’s a real time-saver, that look of hers. Without it, we might spend forty-five minutes to an hour bickering over a particularly sticky issue.†But Irish Eyes also touches on important topics including policemen not getting decent pay and police corruption. The one bad part about this novel is that I stumbled upon this series with book number eight. I will definitely go back and start reading Callahan Garrity from the beginning.
Callahan Garrity is an ex-cop who has opened a cleaning business, The House Mouse with her mother. She has found a great guy but they have kept their lives parallel rather than joining together their households. When her good friend and former partner, Bucky shows up on St. Patrick's Day Callahan is bullied into going to a big shindig with him put on by the newly formed Shamrock Society a fraternity of Irish police officers. When Bucky ends up shot in the head that evening, Callahan feels that something is not quite right so she begins her own investigation into the matter.I have read many of Mary Kay Andrew's books but I was not aware of her Callahan Garrity mystery series. The characters drew you into the story and she was able to keep you guessing about what really did happen that evening. I would certainly read another book in the series.
I've read this book before. In fact, I've read all of the Callahan Garrity series by Kathy Hogan Trocheck aka Mary Kay Andrews. I love the stories but most of all I love the descriptions of Atlanta as I remember it. And Southern women of all ilks as I remember them. This is an entertaining book, not too heavy on the violence. Sad at the end because a favorite character dies.
Back when Mary Kay Andrews was writing as Kathy Trocheck, and turning out mysteries instead of fluff, she was one of my favorite writers. This audio book harks back to that series, and is pretty darned good -- although I think by the time this was written Andrews already had started losing interest in Callahan Garrity and her cleaning crew, who solved mysteries with the same enthusiasm they spruced up dirty houses.I would love to see some new Kathy Trocheck/Callahan Garrity mysteries. Maybe now that Andrews has had a lengthy break from the series, she might consider writing a new book about Callahan and Mac and Sister and the rest of the delightfully mismatched but oh-so-likeable cast.
A realistic read, but not with long descriptions of gore. The killings just are; "just the facts, Jack!". The characters are all flawed, human. A cozy in that it's not too graphic , with some humor thrown in, but still believable, with no sewn-up tight happy ending. It's somewhere in between --and I enjoyed it.
This is the first book I have read by Ms. Andrews, but it won't be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and intend to read the whole series. I have already downloaded book one and as soon as I finish two other books I downloaded last week, I'll start the Callahan Garrity Mystery series from the beginning. I am recommending this series to my friends and have gifted this book to my Sister-in-law in Atlanta. Thank you Mary Kay Andrews.
Callahan Garrity, private eye and cleaning lady, loses a former partner and good friend when he makes a quick stop at a convenience store. Callahan, even after being warned off, tries to find the bad guys involved. The writing is tightly plotted, the story line will keep you guessing, the characters are likeable – except of course, for the sleazy ones. Andrews has another winner in her Garrity series of mysteries. Her fans will love it and new readers, who need not have read any others in series, will find a new author to seek out.4 of 5 stars
Mary Kay Andrews REALLY knows life in the South. Reading Callahan Garrity books is like visiting an old high school friend...lots of fun and laughs even when surrounded by serious situations. From the first of her books I read to the present she is my "go-to author when I want to laugh and escape to a comfortable mystery. I recommend this book as an entertaining and quick read. It moves very quickly and can be finished in one sitting. A fun read!
