For many interested in this book, it is handicapped, in my view, by two things: first of all, the blurb is more than a little little grandiose, and this might possibly put off some potential readers. It is an exemplary book, but not as powerfully groundbreaking as the blurb seems to indicate. I note this only to encourage people not to be put off, and read the book for its genuine merits, not its advertisement. Also, as an academic book, it is very expensive! (hence the continued need for libraries. Request that yours purchase this work - this author still receives a royalty).What Sanchez Garcia has done, however, is brilliant. He has synthesized most of the respectable secondary English sources together, and discussed that information within the lens of sociology: in short, what are the implications when a society follows certain organizing principles and practice methodologies within its martial arts. Here, martial arts are neither 'self-defense,' or 'warfare arts' - they are a manifestation of social forces and a social force in their own right. Rather than 'what is the perfect sword cut?', it is, 'who is the man seeking to achieve the perfect sword cut within this cultural milieu?' AND 'what happens to a society when such men pursue said goal in the way that they do?'I often recognized the source of data that Garcia cited, even before checking the bibliography, having read the particular book or author myself, but I was, through Garcia's work, able to see the information in a new light. In particular, how changes in society caused changes in martial practice, and how in 'reverse,' those martial practices served to support the society, or sometimes, drive them towards change).Full disclosure - Garcia consulted with me in a rather small aspect of his work, concerning tairiku ronin in the Meiji and Taisho periods. He obviously took our correspondence as a base to further research the subject, and his results are spot on. In my view, this is the mark of a true researcher - ready to change the course of one's theory when offered contradictory data.Why, then, did I not give this estimable work, one I would recommend to anyone interested in classical and modern Japanese arts, five stars? There are two related reasons. First of all, there is a wealth of Japanese language source material which he, a non-Japanese reader, was not able to access. These sources surely would have enriched, and perhaps, in some cases, contradicted parts of his thesis (at the same time, I will assert that he couldn't have made better use of the sources he had!). The second reservation I had is that, at certain points, he recorded errors - small historical errors - that I recognized as coming from the sources he used. In other words, some of the most reputable books in English on Japanese martial arts have mistakes, uncorrected. Because there is still a rather limited number of these works, errors tend to be passed around by others not able to avail themselves of new primary sources.This, however, is a quibble on my part, because none of the errors I noticed contradicted his work as a whole. The important point is that his broad thesis and conclusions are powerful and thought-provoking.
