The concept of this book has so much going for it and I give kudos to the author for compiling so many potentially helpful photos from all angles. I was really looking forward to the benefits it would offer me in sculpting, drawing, and painting.Unfortunately, though, the black-and-white photos aren't of particularly good quality and it's difficult to see some detail that would be helpful in many of the photos. There are 16 photos to each page which definitely limits their size; but even viewing them under some of the professional magnifiers I own, the detail is not sharp enough in many cases to be helpful. This is actually the only negative I have of the book -- in every other aspect, I'd rate it 5-stars. But, poor photo quality in a book that is only comprised of photos is a BIG negative. My 3-star rating is actually an "okay" -- which is what I feel the book is. There's a lot of good stuff in the book, but it's offset by the photo quality in my opinion.Despite the photo quality, there is much to love about this book if you're an artist attempting to convey some form of expression of the human face. There are LOADS of faces (2,500 apparently -- I didn't count them, but that's what the book promises). The best part of all of these faces is that they're making various expressions--some typical, some bizarrely exaggerated--and they show that person's head/face from all different angles (the various angles of the same expression is very beneficial for sculpting the human head). There are front views, various angles of side views, views looking downward at the face, and others with head tilted back so you're seeing the chin stretch (and, frankly, looking up the nose). The photos are of both males and females, include various ethnicities, and are broken into age ranges of 20s through early 80s.Besides the expressive faces, there are also a few pages that show sequential expressions, the position of the mouth/lips while expressing phonemes, kissing positions, and various types of hats and headgear. There's also a small section at the beginning that shows the skull as well as the underlying muscles of the face (but, again, the photo quality isn't very good there).I was initially disappointed when I received the book and considered returning it. However, I've decided that I'll likely find some benefit from some of the photos. I'm hopeful that Mr. Simon may decide to publish some version of it again with better photo quality. If he does, I'll buy.

I have the digital and the paper version and I really like it but there is one important factor that makes me put it 4 starts. The paper version is very good, but SMALL photos (I usually have to scan the photo and print it again so I can work easily, that's why the 4 starts for the paper version). So I decided to get the digital version, because I thought, "well, maybe they show bigger pictures, easier to work". Wrong, the digital version has exactly the same photo size but guess what, I cannot scan it and print them, so not very good. It still works fine, you can use a phone or tablet to see the picture and zoom it a bit without losing too much detail. But about the book, if you are an artist, and you like to get a big selection of faces with different expressions, get this, is very good, there are people of all ages (I don't recall seen children now that I think about this), from young to old people, doing all kind of gestures in different positions and some examples (just a few) of what other artists have done with them. The people in the book do the same expression and they have photos in different angles. Then another expression and the same. There are a lot of photos to chose from of every subject, I don't remember how much but enough to have a good selection. I have used many times, and I don't regret buying it, I BUY IT TWICE, what else I can say. I just wish the digital one was better.

While I see the importance of this kind of book, I'm a bit disappointed that the author didn't update this work. The good:+ Plenty of pictures+ All age groups from the 20's -80's+ Many races+ Good selection of expressions- Needs Improvement.- Pictures look dated- Pictures are dark and fuzzy.- Pictures are a bit small. It's time for the author (or someone else) to make a better version of this book.

This photo is a decent reference, but I don't find myself using it often. The photos are very small and the lighting is poor. I thought the paper would be thick and glossy, but it is thin and matte, almost like newspaper. The photos seem to be of "regular" people, which makes it more realistic, but I would have appreciated having at least a couple professional models in the mix. Speaking of professional, based on the looks of the photos they don't seem to have been taken by a professional photographer. So in the end you have a book of tiny black and white photos of amateurs taken by amateurs.

Update: I've gotten frustrated with this book because the pictures are really too small to draw from. I wish he had one large photo of the person so you can see some detail, and then a variety of smaller expression shots.Original review: This is a great reference book to have on hand when you need to figure out how to communicate an emotion with facial expression. There is a good range of ages, genders, ethnicities, body types, expressions. Some of them are just hilarious to look at on their own. The expressions tend toward the extremes, and are probably most useful for cartoons or comics, but you can always tone them down if you're looking for subtlety.

Old outdated looking photos, not terribly interesting or useful expressions, you're better off doing a google search unfortunately if you want expressions reference. Arrived timely and in good condition though.

The Kindle version falls way short on picture quality. This is a big deal for artists, especially animators, who need to visualize the muscles and bone structure underneath these expressions. It almost seems as if they lost the original high-res photos and had to make do with reproducing the paperback. Also, while most of the expressions are usable, many seem contorted just for the sake of making funny faces, and not motivated by an underlying emotion; again, important for animators. Pros: a LOT of photos. It's just a shame a work of this scope is sabotaged by poor pictures.
