As someone with not just one, but three different inflammatory auto-immune disorders to cope with, I figured out some time ago that my body responds much better to a healthy diet than to prescription medicines, which often have very undesirable side effects, as well. Emma Green explains very clearly about inflammatory reactions and diet, including which foods to avoid and/or minimize. Even better, she's filled this book with great tasty, easy-to-prepare dishes and beverages, with ingredients which are not at all difficult to find. Many are those I've already learned to keep on hand. She's given me some new and interesting ideas on how to use them to make healthy and delicious food. This book is well thought out, well planned, and well executed. Thank you, Emma Green!

An helpful book. This book is splendid. I inclined such huge numbers of successful thing from this book. I was just diagnosed with an inflammatory condition, and I found this book to be super helpful. I did an Anti Inflammatory Diet once a few years ago, and I felt the best I ever have in my life-- but figuring out to make was overwhelming and stressful. This book takes out the overwhelm, and makes following this diet much, much easier. It is simple, straightforward, and very easy to read. I can't wait to get started with these recipes! The only suggestion I have with future editions is to include more substitutions, particularly with the smoothies.Also, wanted to add that YES this book does include some food not typically found in an Anti Inflammatory Diet. However, if you read the entire intro section it explains why, and stresses the importance of listening to your body and eliminating those foods if they cause you trouble.I was really astounded by perceiving what number of imperative recommendations accumulated in such a short book. Creator completed a phenomenal activity. I'll most likely prescribe this book to my loved ones. I really appreciate this book. Thanks to creator.

If you, like every person, do not know where to start a diet, but the doctor prescribed it for you, do not be afraid to give up unhealthy and high-calorie foods, because a healthy diet involves a large variety of dishes that will undoubtedly become your favorite.

Very disappointed in this book. Pictures ( all black and white by the way) do not match recipes. Info is screwed up. Limit fish to twice a week yet the diet is fish 5 days a week for a month!Like others have said, the book says to avoid certain foods but there they are in the recipes!Do not waster your money on this

Food is often the answer to our diseases that’s true…among the anti-inflammatory foods are leaf vegetables, beets, pineapple, salmon and others. This book collects a nice collection with their part.

I'm following this meal plan since a week now and results are satisfied so far, a good collection of anti inflammatory Recipes is inside breakfast,dinner, lunch, main dishes, desserts and soups are included. I cooked some snakes recipes too Smoked Trout & Mango Wraps Smoked Turkey Wrapped Zucchini Sticks Sweet Potato Chips and Mini Snack Muffins are delicious.

The book contradicts itself. Says to limit or avoid dairy, soy, and citrus yet here it is eith recipies with cheese, soymilk and grapefruit! I'd return it but it costs more then half of what I paid just to return it!

For sure everyone wants to eat healthy and organic grown foods, just that some people can't be able to do that because of being busy with many things and they just go on processed and easy to make foods. This cookbook I think can help to change their lifestyle into more healthier living. It gives essential info on right eating plan and recipes. This whole series of books is just wonderful. Pick a topic that your child is or might be inteterested in and these books draw them right in. My son has been reading them since second grade (end of third now) and he still anxiously awaits them as I buy new. They are by far his favorite series and in my opinion so much better than the other silly/gross/obnoxious series out there.

My son loves these books. He greatly enjoyed learning more about Ali and his rise as an athlete. I would recommend this series for any child who enjoys reading non-fiction!

This was one of two books that my 8 year old read this book for part of his research for his black history month project. Lots of great information.

Mistakes abound in this book but the worst thing about it is that so much of these words pertain to farming and farm tools, including plowing, plowing, and plowing. The writer is vague when he doesn't understand what a hair receiver is, for example, or that provision is made for a hansom cab driver, not "provisions" which are presumably attached to the cab for the driver to eat !!! An embarrassment to read by anyone who has a knowledge of past times. Like me !!

Words are interesting, and the stories behind them are fascinating. I was familiar with some of these words already, since my closest friends were my parents' age and older, but this book taught me more.I recommend it to all philomaths.

This was an excellent read. It was apparent that the material was well researched and I felt the struggles and daily living of this tribe well reflected their lifestyle

Interesting. Fun. Some of these words and phrases I already knew, but then I'm an Old Guy. A good deal for the price ($0.99).

Enjoyable reading

I really was looking forward to reading this book. The title piqued my interest, but the contents really left me disappointed. As a collector of often thought absurd objects such as "pie birds" I was hoping to open a treasure chest here. But I found that three quarters or more of the entries are well known words and phrases to me. I mean who doesn't know what an "ox" or a "radiator ornament" is? Or a "model A" or "model T"? And they incorrectly identify a "LaSalle" as a car made by Cadillac when it was actually a Chrysler product? The author also lists most all now defunct automobile companies like "Hudson" or "Hupmobile", "DeSoto" and "REO" to name a few, but misses the truly unique companies like Darrin , Henry J or Frazer. Who doesn't know what a "dutch oven" or a "dishpan" is? This book really misses the mark in this readers opinion.

If you're looking for an interesting book to read about quirky words and phrases, this is probably not going to interest you. Despite the title, there are precious few phrases, as such.If, however, you are a writer, pursuing historical fiction, or if you are a jeopardy freak such as I, 1,001 Words and Phrases... is precisely the sort of book that can make your writing a hit, or your next appearance with Alex Trebek (if you're incredibly lucky regarding category selection) a major success. Why is that?On several occasions (too few to be sure) the author has included illustrations to demonstrate the work meaning. For example, are you familiar with a:* Bung Hole, [screen shot #1] or* When they had wanted to clean their carpet, what was the tool that got the job done back in the olden times? [Screen shot #2] Or,* Do you ever wonder that the your old great grandpa did when he was homesteading and there was a blizzard outside and he or his faithful one simply had to go pee? [Screen shot #3]For these three, I am attaching screen shots. Fox's memoir takes the reader on a journey through a young man's life-- a young man who already has a relationship with the reader through the "magical thinking" that occurs between celebrity and fans. Fox succeeds greatly in drawing the reader into a deeper, more intimate connection with him so that we can come to agree with him that "celebrity" is merely a "funhouse", and that behind all his work as an actor, he is simply a person trying to maneuver his way through the challenges of life, just like the rest of us. Though his challenges are indeed his own, they are brought to a scale relatable and, at times, even recognizable to the average person. You will not find behind-the-scenes anecdotes from his TV and film projects, but you will find how his acting gigs serve as benchmarks, and- at times- causes for other concerns in his everyday life (like after being diagnosed with PD). Fox does this in a way that allows fans to embrace and respect Mike as a man with deep integrity beyond his work on screen. Fox declares, for good reason, why the best personal turning points in his life came after his diagnosis of PD. It is the anecdotes that support this declaration plus the basic knowledge the reader already has of Mike-- his acting roles, and the fact that he has PD- that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish. At the end of this book, it will not be Mike's autograph you seek, but his friendship- his company.

Being diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s changed Michael J. Fox’s life, and not all bad. In fact, he thinks of himself as lucky because in many ways, by pushing him to turn his life around, his diagnosis saved his life. Lucky Man is mostly the story of his Parkinson’s diagnosis and coming to terms with it. He is very honest about his partying, issues in his marriage, and his anger over his body betraying him. It’s an excellent read for any Michael J. Fox fan.

I've always been a fan of Michael Fox's. When I saw this memoir for only 2 bucks on Amazon, I couldn't resist. Boy, am I glad I grabbed it. I learned much about Michael the man, since I already knew the actor.I thought I knew enough too but soon learned I knew nothing at all. I also got a bigger glimpse into Parkinson's Disease and the effects it has on the person who has it, and the people around them.It's nice to see a celebrity like Michael using his stature to bring awareness, as well as attending senate meetings on behalf of people with Parkinson's, to try for more funding for research. Being so active in the fight is admirable, especially when you see the extents he has taken.There were some funny moments too. I loved how he shared his family life, from childhood to now, his stories were heartwarming.Lots of people will enjoy this read, a fan or not. For those not sure, believe me when I tell you that it's more than meets the eye.

This was an enjoyable and inspiring read. Though he wrote this himself and there may be biases here, Fox comes across as honest and humble. He highlights his life and lets us know what he was thinking and feeling during each of those events. Concerning his successes, he takes you to the point where he got there and then moves on, not dwelling on those high points. He seems to want us to know how he has grown and changed from his experiences.Early in the book he says that if he could have stayed the person he was before getting Parkinson's, and then didn't get Parkinson's, that he wouldn't go back to that other guy. He feels that he has grown so much in a positive way from his post Parkinson's diagnosis experiences. And I believe him.I can't say that I was really a Fox fan when I bought this book. I only got it because it was the cheap Kindle deal of the day and thought it would be an interesting read. The most I had seen of him was on Family Ties. I must say I did like that show at the time. I remember when I first saw him on the show (it was the episode where he made some great investments in the stock market) that I thought he did have "something." It seemed like he was stealing the show and of course everyone else thought so too!Anyway, after reading the book I'm interested in checking him out in other stuff. He makes you feel like you kind of know him and as a result you are curious about his other performances. At least that's how he affected me.There is a lot of meat in this book. His struggle with Parkinson's is just part of it. I can't really cover all the good things here. If you want an inspiring and interesting read I would recommend this for you.

Fantastic book and highly recommended with a poisitive message to his readers. You enjoy it tremendously. I would probably point more stars if I had the option to. So full 5 stars!Michael J. Fox is a unique and very talent guy. It was obvious when you watched him acting. And for my opinion, he is still considers as one of the best. He was fast pace and so natural. Never acted from other valance view point. Now that he allowed us to have an insight into his inner world, it was amazing to see what he could do to make things go right and to an end phenomena of a positive point despite his condition. He went into an extreme to entertain us, giving up his health. Which show how much his self determinism view, is so important and above all that he was willing to sacrifice his life. Currently he suffers phisically from PD but spiritually he never changed. The language he uses is literate and reading his book is very enjoyable, leaving us with a message of, no mercy, but "one can always do something about it".A person lives as long as he strives to help. When he stops, he dies. MJF never stopped contributing to others. Thus, and the Way I see it, his goal of his life wasn't just acting and finance himself. Otherwise we wouldn't continue hearing him to date being out there and communicate. He never rest despite his condition, but continue to operate as a free being.

I learned so much from this book! It was a very fascinating story of both kidney transplant/disease and Iranian society.

The Iranian experience presented in this book offers a potential solution for America's growing dilemma where over 19,000 people die each year while on the organ transplant waiting list. Our current law which dates back 30 years now prohibits any meaningful form of compensation for live organ donors. In our society today, it is impractical to expect a sufficient number of donors to come forward out of pure humanitarian instincts and less than 1% of those who die each year end up being deceased transplant donors. This book paints a vivid picture of the dilemma we face in America if we do not change our current practices and laws. We can look forward to more deaths, continued poor quality of life for kidney diseased victims and much higher health costs. The most successful and cost effective solution is a live organ transplant!

Very informative and well written

This book is an interesting and informative look at how Iran and the USA have grappled with an important medical issue--organ donations. But what I found to most enjoyable was the recount of what life is like in Iran, a perspective that we don't get in the mainstream media. Dr. Fry-Revere has a keen eye for the details of everyday life in Iran about which she writes fluidly and easily.

This book accurately describes the life a patient has on dialysis. The USA medical community should relook at the living donor kidney current laws and reconsider how donors could be compensated for donating a kidney or liver.

An important work that will hopefully awaken the logic of organ selling and end the shortage, A well written and a mind-provoking read. Well done

Of the more than 100,000 waiting, only 15 percent get transplants, and over 30 percent of those will lose that kidney with the first five years."Iran's shortage was erased within 15 years of legally allowing donors to sell their kidneys.How can we not entertain the idea of reducing or eliminating the shortage in the US when there is such impressive evidence of a solution?The cultural, historical & religious information provided about Iran in the book are very helpful in understanding how selling a kidney in Iran is viewed and allowed in religious and legal contexts.The patience exercised & the risks taken by the author in order to research & examine the ethical complexities that surround this potential yet controversial solution to the kidney donation shortage are admirable & impressive.I appreciated the author's forthrightness about the internal & external conflicts experienced on the research trip.As a result, I felt at times as though I was having a conversation with the author because she addressed so many of the questions & concerns I had while reading the book.Dr. Fry-Revere's ability to anticipate, address, and answer these questions and concerns is remarkable.As I said at the beginning of my review...read this book.Seriously. Read this book.

This is a stand alone story. It does not end in a cliffhanger. There is foreshadowing for another book, which the author says is coming. There is little swearing. There is one non-graphic scene of consensual sex, but everything else is heavy flirting and mild innuendo.Colin is a young man with a problem. Trained as a hunter, he and his girlfriend, another hunter, are pushed by their mentor, a 2000 year old druid, into hunting something that turns out to be more than they can handle. When the fight goes poorly, he discovers he's been cursed and turns into a hulk-type berserker, killing everyone and thing in his path, including his girlfriend--who may be haunting him.Threatened into accepting a job from Maeve, queen of the fae, he tries to balance returning to college, finding the object Maeve wants, and handling his drunken, drug addicted mentor.Colin is a likeable character. Younger than usual in these type of stories, we see him struggling to overcome his crushing guilt as he attends therapy, and talking about not enabling his mentor. This is not to say the book is full of self-discovery angst. Instead, it just has the ring of a young man trying to live a typical life, failing through no fault of his own, and being damned annoyed about it.Colin's world is richly populated with well known and lesser known people and creatures. There's the quartet of red caps who seem to be stuck in a bad 80's version of the Sopranos, the bar keep who is the head of the local vampires, the obligatory circle of witches/wizards with whom he has a mutual lack of admiration, various strange creatures from Irish mythology, werewolves, and a woman friend who shrouds herself so well in don't-look-at-me spells that people think he's talking to himself when he's having coffee with her. All of these creatures and people are integrated easily into the story, and make sense when they show up.The only thing this reader felt could be improved was that some explanations were a bit overlong.This story was an excellent read; lighter than others in this genre without sacrificing plot or characters. This reader looks forward to the next book.

Colin McCool is all grown up and wants to be a normal human but the magic realm isn't that forgetting or forgiving.The opening of this book literally broke my heart. My intro to Colin McCool was with Druid Blood in which he is a teenager and just learning about the magic that exists in his world and with the opening of Junkyard Druid my lovely image of Colin's world was crushed and my heart bleed for Colin. And that's just the first chapter, as the book goes on we see how Colin has and continues to deal with the events of that first chapter. We are also introduced to a great cast of characters that will hopefully be helpful to Colin in the future.I was literally drawn into this world and its characters, M.D. Massey's writing was very smooth and the pacing of the book was nice and steady with an open ending for more in the series. I'm definitely looking forward to reading Graveyard Druid next to see what else happens to Colin.

This was so bad I returned it . . . but I think I'm not in the majority. I've talked to others who like it, but it just wasn't for me. I got to chapter 12 (about halfway through) and I had a massive case of ennui. I didn't like the story, the world, the character . . . the narrator was okay so if I had to plug one bit for this book I'd tell you the narrator did a really good job. Everything else? Completely not to my taste. Too dark, too whiny, to illogical. The main character had not one redeeming characteristic, the story was clunky, the main supporting character was a Double D young lady with huge issues. Just ugh. Moving on.

Colin McCool is trying to pick the pieces of his life up and go to college. The problem is his dead girlfriend is haunting him, the local Fae Queen is blackmailing him, and he gets tangled up in solving some local murders. He has a nice cozy room in a junkyard... where his addict mentor lives. To top it all off, he's cursed. At least he has a place to get a good cup of coffee.This is a new adult urban fantasy with a lot of snark and suspense. It was a fun read with some unique characters. Colin himself is not so cool, but he's a nice guy who can kick butt. He's endearingly sorta nerdy at parts. I felt as if he was very powerful druid for a character in the first book of a series, but he's up against some even more powerful foes. I really loved some of the secondary characters like Sabine, Hemi, and Finn. Finn is Colin's mentor and not so likable as a heroin addict, but the mystery surrounding him is fascinating.I wondered what the point of the journal entries were for the first third of the book other than to give us background, but it comes together later on to add another juicy layer to the plot.I recommend this book to urban fantasy fans who love fast-paced action, wit, and mystery, and who want something different than the regular vampire and werewolf monster stories.

L.M. Montgomery's "Pat of Silver Bush" is a charming coming of age novel, set in Prince Edward Island, Canada, between the World Wars. Its heroine, Patricia Gardiner, is good-hearted, hardworking, and fiesty when her ginger is up. Her outstanding characteristic is her love of Silver Bush, the traditional family farmhouse and a source of stability and pride. Young Pat spends much of the story honing her domestic skills, and can imagine nothing more fulfilling than being mistress of Silver Bush.The novel follows Pat from age seven to eighteen. She will experience such childhood challenges as a new baby in the family, school, her first party, her first beau, and her first wedding. Other challenges are more traumatic: a couple of serious family illnesses, the slow departure of siblings to their futures, and the death of a treasured friend. She will be assisted along the way by Judy Plum, the family's long time Irish domestic and story-teller; by bosom friend Bets Wilcox; and by kindred spirit Hilary Gordon. The ending is a bit bittersweet (and a setup for a sequel) as Pat finds herself, somewhat by default, at last the mistress of Silver Bush, but at the cost of a promising relationship with a young man.Sadly, "Pat of Silver Bush" appears to be out of print, but is very highly recommended, even in used condition, to fans of Lucy Maud Montgomery's novels and her remarkable storytelling skills.

Although by the end of Pat of Silver Bush, I was as impressed in many ways as I have been by all of Lucy Maud Montgomery's work that I have read so far, I have to also say that some aspects of the experience were not as engaging to this reader as I would have liked.As with her other creations, Anne `of Green Gables', Emily `of New Moon' and Jane `of Lantern Hill', Pat `of Silver Bush' is a loving, engaging and interesting child who goes through her early life - slowly at first but then suddenly much more quickly - from the age of 7 through 18 or 19. Her life can best be seen through her relationship with where she lives - in this case, Silver Bush - a typical strength of LM Montgomery's work. As a writer, Miss Montgomery frequently shows us the physical and emotional importance of 'place' as an anchor for her characters. Silver Bush is no less strong for Pat than New Moon was for Emily Starr and Green Gables was for Anne Shirley's early childhood. Place validates and confirms existence, providing stability and support for the heroine as she engages with other elements in her life most notably physical and emotional change.So this relationship between Pat and Silver Bush was a reliably great and positive element about this book, but other relationships were not so good and ill-defined. As I read more, it became apparent that Ms Montgomery was clearly struggling greatly to define Pat's other relationships with the chief members of her family - most notably with her older brother, Joe, her older sister, Winnie, and even more spectacularly with her parents who seem like dim and ghost-like figures on the fringes of Pat's existence. She is closest to Judy, the home servant, but who functions more like Pat's day-to-day mother. Judy is interesting and annoying by turns and I got fed up with every speech prefaced and then littered throughout by 'Oh Oh' and other supposed Irish dialect.Yet, it is Pat's parents who troubled me most about this book because as those of us who have read Montgomery's other works can testify to, her heroines for the most part are orphans who are in need of a home and empathetic parental guidance. In the Anne and Emily series, home takes the place of physical and emotional support but over time, care is additionally provided by Marilla to Anne and by an assortment of dysfunctional aunts to Emily. Yet for Pat, who by contrast, has a loving family and a permanent home, the relationship with her parents doesn't work which is odd. Just like Jane Austen's seeming failure to convincingly define life outside of small communities and lavish homes, and Charlotte Bronte's equal inability to convincingly describe industrial unrest throughout her novel Shirley, Lucy Maud Montgomery is seemingly out of her element with defining a convincing and meaningful relationship between her heroine, Pat, and her parents. They seem to be there, but not there, and yet all of her other heroines have longed for parents so the failure to engage Pat with her mother and father on something other than them just being there, and with little dialog between them, is so much the more striking given the longing that Anne, Emily and Jane have for parental stability.Indeed, I would go further and say that Pat's parents only really cross the book when something indifferent or hostile to Pat's needs and emotions needs to be expressed. I am thinking of her Dad's trip 'out west' to explore a farm possibility and the indifference to Winnie's supposed 'adoption' by relatives which fortunately for Pat fails to work out. They are part of the big picture of Pat's life at Silver Bush but not part of the day-to-day minutiae of existence - all of which is shared with Judy or with her friends Jingle and Bets. Her brother Sid, is better defined, but only in one of the final scenes with Winnie, is Pat's life really expressed in its intersection with her older sister. At least, it is the only time we really get to hear Winnie speak in the book.Pat of Silver Bush is unique in the oeuvre for Ms Montgomery because Pat has siblings and parents but for all of its descriptive and other strengths - we care a lot about what happens to Pat and her friends being amongst those - the way the writer connects or does not connect Pat to the rest of her family but leaves her predominantly in the care of Judy, is indeed a failure. Just telling us how important her parents and siblings are does not convey to this reader at least how important they are. Grieving over Joe leaving for shores unknown, her sister's wedding, her father's trip and her mother's illness does not convey the importance that they all have for Pat because we hardly ever hear her and them in conversation together. The only touching connection delineated with her father comes across with the story of who gets to name the new baby. Yet, 'Cuddles' remains 'Cuddles' throughout the rest of the book so the importance of how Pat manipulates events to allow her father to get to choose the name of the baby is diluted.

I loved Anne and adored Emily, but Patricia Gardiner is my new favorite LMM heroine. This is the story of her devotion to her home, Silver Bush, and her family, including the inimitable Judy Plum, who cares for the Gardiner family. In this book, set on Prince Edward Island, Pat grows up and learns to love others in addition to her family and home. She finds a friend in Hilary "Jingle" Gordon and a kindred spirit in sweet Bets, who comes to live at the Long Lonely House next to Silver Bush. the book moves from Pat's childhood just after the end of the First World War to her young adulthood at age 18. It is truly a wonderful story about growing up, love and loss. Pat stands on her own as another lovely and memorable heroine of Prince Edward Island.
